dříve se punkovému životnímu stylu říkalo punk a punkové hudbě punk-rock, dnes se však pro obojí používá název punk. punková hudba je velmi podobná hard rocku - elektrická kytara, bicí, baskytara a útočné texty většinou o politice. na rozdíl od hard rocku a metalu se však v punkové hudbě nepoužívají klávesy a celkově je hudba rychlejší. zahraniční skupiny: The exploited, Dead kennedys, Nirvana. České skupiny: Jaksi taksi, N.V.Ú, Totální nasazení, E!E, Afekt, Beton, Kečup, Vohnout, A bude hůř, Mad pigs, Tři sestry.
2)hardcore punk
hudba něco mezi punkem a metalem. skupiny: The casualties, Rise against.
3)Oi! punk
punk s rasistickými texty. zahraniční skupiny: Cockney rejects, The specials. České: Orlík.
4)punk-rock
jinak taky kinderpunk. hudba něco mezi punkem a rockem, myšlenka punku téměř žádná - komerční skupiny které mají s pravým punkem pramálo společného. zahraniční skupiny: Green day, Blink 182, good charlotte, Simple plan. české skupiny: Rybičky 48.
